VoiceServer.net Aids Service Providers in Launching Internet Telephony Services
GERMANTOWN, MARYLAND--Using innovative IP Telephony technology, TEK DigiTel Corp. (OTC: TEKI - news) has created a free online specialized Internet Portal that lets Service Providers quickly launch sophisticated VoIP (Voice over IP) services while controlling support costs and investment in telecom infrastructure. Coupled with TEK DigiTel's V-Server family of integrated IP access devices, the new VoiceServer.net capability lets providers offer free and premium voice services to small business customers on the same platform used for Internet access and IP routing.
Similar to conventional Internet Portals such as LYCOS and YAHOO that provide online service aiding users in locating information distributed across the Internet, VoiceServer.net represents the industry's first ``Internet Telephony Portal,'' allowing users of Internet voice technology to find and connect to other VoIP resources. TEK DigiTel will maintain the portal for VoIP end-users and bundle 2 years of access, a $500 value, with every V-Server iGATE Gateway shipped. This in turn, enables TEK's service provider customers to offer free voice calls and closed calling group services over the Internet without investing in the required GateKeeper technology.
An ideal migration path for ISPs entering the voice industry, TEK DigiTel's V-Server iGATE platform features dual mode operation that let providers offer calling packages that include both free and premium voice services. On a call by call basis, users can choose between two types of VoIP calls: free ``cellular quality'' open Internet calls between V-Servers using VoiceServer.net, or premium billable ``toll-quality'' calls to 3rd party gateways and any phone user via carriers' managed IP networks. The VoiceServer.net portal handles the free calls, acting as gatekeeper, so service providers need only provide and maintain their own H.323 Gatekeeper technology for revenue-generating calls.
How it works
Unlike conventional H.323 based GateKeepers, TEK's VoiceServer.net technology locates the remote destination but does not involve itself in the call setup itself. This distinction enables VoiceServer.net to provide better scaling as call volumes increase. Remote V-Server gateways auto-register their locations with the VoiceServer.net system upon start-up and as their IP addresses changes to minimize administration and enable customers to connect using different technologies such as dial-up Analog, ISDN, leased lines, xDSL, and Cable Modem local loops. In addition, VoiceServer.net can create closed dialing groups that allow service providers to structure free VoIP calling packages, similar to MCI's ``Friends and Family'' offering for conventional telephony.
According to President Rocco DiCarlo, VoiceServer.net increases the value of TEK DigiTel's V-Server integrated access routers and VoIP gateway. ``V-Server iGATE and future V-Server products are designed to help providers grow revenues by integrating multiple services with a single CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) device,'' says DiCarlo. ``By including free access to the VoiceServer.net portal into every iGATE we ship, TEK enables ISPs to leverage the allure of free Internet voice calling without incurring administration charges for these calls. With the cost of delivering the free Internet voice component of their offerings fixed, carriers can recoup the costs of the V-Server gateway via monthly access charges and then focus their efforts on delivering the profitable 'Managed IP Telephony' component.''
TEK DigiTel has architected its products to add alternative call processing mechanisms like SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and MGCP (Media Gateway Control Protocol) as they become mainstream. To ensure fast response times and reliability, VoiceServer.net connects to the Internet Backbone in McLean, Virginia with both a primary and secondary server for redundancy.
